Taste of Perth

A few weekends back I braved the horrible weather and head up to Perth for the second, annual taste of Perth festival. Despite, the terrible weather it was a great afternoon filled with delicious food and drinks and I was glad to see the rain didn't put everyone else off.

I was kindly gifted a press ticket, but we bought Dan his for $30 on the door. Inside the venue you use crowns instead of cash, and load your crowns onto a pay pass card. Each dollar equals one crown and dishes started at around 6 crowns, with the most expensive being around 30.

Graze through your dream tasting menu designed from a selection of over 50 tasting dishes crafted by Perth’s latest, greatest and hottest restaurants including el Público, Lalla Rookh, Nobu, Print Hall and many more, enjoy live entertainment, shop from artisan producers, and test your culinary skills in a host of exciting masterclasses. Taste of Perth in partnership with Electrolux is the essential event on Perth’s food and social calendar and with dishes starting from just 6 Crowns it’s an unmissable opportunity to celebrate Perth’s unique dining scene.

The winning ribs from El Publico

and mouth-watering doughnuts from Mary Street Bakery

Pig slider from Bib & Tucker

Solerno blood orange licquer, which was the perfect warm-me-up.

The wonderful staff handed out free ponchos for everyone which was amazing because my coat was far from water proof!

This reisling sorbet was to die for!

It was a great day, although I'm not going to lie, the weather really did ruin it a little bit! The event ended up being quite pricey, and crowns seemed to disappear quite quickly but it was such a unique experience, being able to have little dishes from all of Perth's top restaurants that I'd say it was totally worth it. My only suggestion is more variety for vegetarians & vegans!

Have you been to a food festival before? If you live in England I whole-heartedly recommend Christchurch food and wine festival  you've missed it next year but it's incredible.

Pixel Coffee, Leederville

I've visited a lot of blog and instagram worthy places lately, but none come close to Pixel Coffee in Leederville. Just a short drive from the CBD this new coffee house has quickly risen to instagram fame, and I'm sure you can see why. The staff are beyond knowledgable when it comes to coffee, in fact they hands down out coffee-d me, and I love coffee.

Dan went for the super smash and even he was blown away by the beautiful presentation. He grabbed his dinner away from my camera and quickly tucked in remarking 'these are the best eggs I've ever had' and then rambled on about not having discovered poaches eggs until we moved to Perth and how he wishes he'd had them in England, 25 years of missing out on poached eggs. He even ate the avocado, feta and all the greenery too.

I went for the acai bowl, I'm not going to lie it's probably 90% of the reason I chose to head all the way up to Perth for brunch. I fell in love with acai when I went to Brasil a few years back, and haven't found a good acai bowl since, but oh my god. This was clearly hand crafted by foodie angels and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Honestly, if there's one thing you eat in Perth make it this.

Beautiful design, beautiful staff and beautiful food.

Pixel Coffee, I love you.

The Pickled Fig, Fremantle

The Pickled Fig is part of a small chain of fig restaurants across Perth. Nestled on the edge of the beach in North Coogee it makes the perfect place for us South of River folk to go for a lazy brunch. I'd heard a lot about The Fig restaurants from Catherine who loves The Wild Fig which is in Scarborough. A quick google said the menu was vegan friendly, so in the car we hopped...

We turned up and grabbed a table as soon as one was free, the cafe is so popular especially with locals and their dogs who seem to fill the outside space after a walk along the dog beach.

Iced coffee

I went for the quinoa, buckwheat and coconut porridge. I was pretty impressed when it came out, a very generous portion and beautifully presented. It was okay, and by okay I mean I wouldn't eat it again. In the nicest way possible the dish just wasn't for me and it was far too bland. I'd also like to just be really fussy and add that the staff told me it was vegan but it was drizzled in honey, which isn't vegan...

What we really need to talk about though is the eggs...

I'm gonna let the pictures do the talking

Pure eggy heaven (if you like eggs).

The service was pretty good, everything was brought out and cleared quickly and the young lad who served me at the till was really helpful and friendly.

When we were finished we took a 30 second walk down on to the beach...

A beautiful morning in Perth.

Have you tried any of The Fig restaurants?

MINTED

Minted is an online marketplace for creatives across the world, allowing them to showcase their talents. Through minted you're able to fully customise products to truly create something special, here's some of my favourite things...

The huge array of beautiful art works has left me re-designing our house. I fell in love with Annie Seaton's Surfers (pictured above), and reckon they'd fit in wonderfully with the beachy vibe we're after. They also have a range of map gifts which are out of this world, they'd look amazing framed and given to a loved one, maybe of a place that means a lot to them, like the print of the United Kingdome for expats like us! Or perhaps a personalised print for a new arrival or a super on trend LOVE print in gold foil for the one you love. Minted also offer framing for prints, which I think is awesome as it can be hard to find the right frame.

Minted also have a wonderful range of customisable stationary including some of the most beautiful save the date cards, wedding invitations and RSVP's I've ever seen. They also include free envelope printing which would totally help take some stress out of wedding planning!

If you're looking for a gift, ideas for your wedding or big occasion I highly recommend minted, their independent artists design and create some truly amazing products, just a few of which I've featured above. Their customer service is incredible and the quality is second to none, I can't wait to show you guys some of the beautiful things I've designed soon! And if you're worried about postage, it's only $9.95 to both Australia and the UK.

Have you used minted before? Where's your favourite place to buy beautiful, customisable gifts?

Kent Street Deli, Rockingham

Kent Street Deli  is a breath of fresh air for Rockingham, focusing on fresh local produce. It's my absolute favourite place to grab something to eat outside of Perth, the staff are friendly, there's heaps to choose from and the food is always incredible.

Dan enjoying his coffee in the sunshine.
If you're a soya fan, they do an amazing vanilla soy latte!

the food is all freshly cooked, but the chefs are always hard at work so that food comes out quickly and beautifully presented..

Dan chose the bacon and corn fritters, drizzled in maple syrup. It looked pretty awesome and he was completely smitten with it.

The royal blue fries and aioli are always a winner, grab a bowl to share if you're ever in town.

Trying to be a little healthier I went for zucchini noodles with pesto, olive and tomato and they were absolutely amazing. It's so nice to visit somewhere with a good range of vegetarian friendly options,  especially something a bit more creative than a cheese & tomato sarnie! I washed my noodles down with one of their delicious juices.

You can find Kent Street Deli at 3/1 Kent Street in Rockingham.
They're open every day 7am - 4pm.
