happy holidays

Oh my gosh what a year it's been, starting in Australia, then home to the UK for 8 months and now we're back and staying for the foreseeable future! It was only fair that we spent part of our christmas day on the beach, so we toasted to good health, happiness and a bright future before running and jumping into the waves- the perfect way to cool off. And before anyone asks, yes we did have a roast.

I hope you all had a wonderful christmas and I wish you all the best for the new year, here's to an awesome 2014 and an even better 2015!

Lake Clifton

We found Lake Clifton almost by accident, I got a bit carried away driving down the highway and before we knew it we saw big brown signs saying ' Lake Clifton viewing' and 'Thrombolites' and as we were in no rush we decided to take a little detour, over a rather large hill and down past a few wineries (which I must go back to soon...Mango Wine...yes please!). We found ourselves in a  little dirt car park, hopped out the car and followed the nearest footpath...

Lake Clifton is park of the Yalgorup National Park which is about 100km South of Perth and just a short drive South of Mandurah. The park is home to a chain of 10 lakes, Lake Clifton being the second biggest. You'll notice the strange boulder like formations in the lake, Thrombolites, which 'are clotted accretionary structures formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding, and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms, especially cyanobacteria. Stromatolites are similar but consist of layered accretions.' Thanks Wikipedia, you really cleared that up for us... In non-geologist terms Thrombolites are living rocks, and that's pretty neat.

Rockpooling

There's a little beach not far from home that, when you catch the tide just at the right time, is the perfect place for rock pooling....

It's also the perfect place for surfing, body boarding, paddle boarding, sunbathing and general beach frolicking; which at the moment involves reading Chris Carter books, is anyone else a fan? 

I'm afraid that yes, this is pretty much just another 'look how sunny it is in Australia' post, what's even better is there's plenty more to come...

Perth royal show

Perth royal show is a yearly event organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia held at Claremont show grounds. Apparently the show is a pretty big deal, and although we'd never heard of it before we jumped in the car and drove up to the city to see what all the fuss was about....

In true Aussie style the day ended with an amazing firework display. 

There really is something for everyone at the Perth royal show, whether you're in to petting cute animals, watching dirt biking and BMX tricks or just in to some good ol' fashion wood chopping. Entry was $28 per adult with children under 12 going free.
