The hike to Lopes Mendes
The funny thing about being in or near a rain forests is that sometimes it rains, I guess the title gives it away. After a super bumpy ferry crossing from the mainland we arrived on Ilha Grande to beautiful blue skies, we dumped our bags in the pousada and headed straight to the beach for sunbathing. The next day we decided to hike from the main town, Abraao, to Lopes Mendes, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We'd been warned by some girls we met met in Argentina that the hike is tiring and shouldn't be attempted in the havianas I was now accustomed too. It was tiring, in fact tiring doesnt come close. The first portion to the beach where the tourists get dropped off was bearable but as we joined the trail over the final hill the skies opened and it poured with rain, my clothes were soaked, my bag was soaked and I was thankful I'd chosen to wear my bikini. But as we came to the end of the trail, after pretty much sliding down the other side of the hill and deciding the rain was just funny, it was obvious it was all worth it. It was still raining but we were greeted by one of the most beautiful squeeky clean, white sandy beaches in the world. The sea was warm and the waves were mighty, although nothing compared to the power of those in Rio and after a few hours splashing in the waves we headed back over the hill and jumped on a boat back to town.
